There’s more to wellness than just exercising and eating healthy meals. Taking a comprehensive idea of your health— nourishing your mind, body, and soul—is critical for your overall health. We like to term this as self-care. Here are a number of our favorite methods for practicing self-care.
We may be engaging in social distancing, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t able to stay connected! Book a virtual coffee time or happy hour with your friends. Keep the conversation uplifting and tell each other something good that happened to you in the last week. Talk about plans for when you can meet again and how wonderful it will be to give them a huge, warm hug. Together we are more capable and can support each other. That’s what friends should do!
Follow a Flexible Routine
Start with a schedule for your yourself but allow for some flexibility. For instance, wake up around the same time each morning and head to bed around the same time at nighttime. Draft your goals for the day and schedule your work projects, but allow some time for your daily workout, a walk outside, or to dig into your favorite book. Don’t be too strict with your agenda that you create extra stress. Finding a balance between routine and relaxation will help you have a more productive and satisfying day.
Appreciation is good for us. The more gratitude we offer to others during uncertain times, the better and tougher we become. Allow others grace. One of our preferred ways to exercise gratitude is to call a loved one and express to them how much you cherish them. A personal note is also a welcome and unexpected surprise that is guaranteed to make anyone’s day.
Nothing’s better than spending time out of the house, basking in the fresh air. Take a break and walk with your pup every day after lunch. Wave hello to your neighbors (from a physical distance) and see how they’re feeling. Stay in the sun for 10 minutes and practice taking deep breaths—you will feel so much better!
Just because we can’t go out for food at our favorite places doesn’t mean we can’t savor our meals! Craft a new recipe for dinner and make your meals feel special. Turn on your favorite song, get the kiddos in on it, and have some fun with it!
