Helps Prevent Muscle Loss as You Age

Being active becomes even more important as we age. A middle-aged adult will lose an average of 3 percent of their muscle mass every year. (2) This degenerative loss of muscle mass is referred to as sarcopenia. (The actual meaning of sarcopenia is “loss of flesh.”) Sarcopenia is a “use it or lose it” case.

If you don’t challenge your muscles to get stronger, they will eventually degenerate. Living a couch potato lifestyle heightens your chance of having sarcopenia. This loss of muscle includes decreased quality of muscle tissue, strength, and flexibility. (3)

Osteoporosis is a disease that affects the quality and mass of your bones. (The exact meaning of osteoporosis is “porous bone.”) Bones are similar to your muscles–if you don’t challenge your bones to become stronger, they become fragile.

But the good news is, strength training builds bone density and encourages strong muscles! Frequent strength training, in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet, can help stop osteoporosis and combat sarcopenia–and in some cases, even reverse it! (5)
